Porto, Portugal – August 3, 2025
The first day of the 29er World Championships in Porto kicked off with a coaches meeting and a skippers briefing, setting the tone for a day full of energy and anticipation. Despite a late start on the water, racing began around 15:00 on Course A and 15:30 on Course B, with the fleets randomized for the day — and they will remain randomized for tomorrow’s qualifying races.
The wind conditions challenged both race committees and sailors, but the spirit onshore and on the water was outstanding. Coaches, sailors, and volunteers all showed great commitment and enthusiasm, which we deeply appreciate. A total of 12 races were successfully completed across the two race courses.
The Secretary of State for Sport, Pedro Dias, attended the opening day of competition between the Port of Leixões and Salgueiros Beach, accompanied by António José Barros, President of the Portuguese Sailing Federation, and Olympic sailor Pedro Costa. He highlighted “the dynamic and proactive nature of Portuguese associations, capable of organizing world-class competitions that attract thousands of participants,” and the importance of hosting a major event in a non-Olympic class like the 29er, which helps prepare the next generation for the 49er and 49erFX Olympic pathway.

5th – ARG 3042 Diego Pasquarello / Marcos Pruden
The late finish meant the KidzInk workshop was postponed, but the sailors were welcomed ashore with a much-appreciated pasta party. After a long first day, we hope everyone gets a good rest ahead of Day 2.
Tomorrow qualifying races are scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, though the wind forecast is not very promising. We will do our best to get racing in and continue the momentum of this exciting championship.
