A short biography of David Campbell James, our Class Race Officer and Treasurer.
My name is David Campbell James and I am the Financial Officer for the International 29er Class. I have also been appointed by the Class Executive to be the Class Race Officer and am responsible for making sure that our international championships such as the Worlds and the Europeans are run to the highest possible standards.
To introduce myself, I am a former Olympic sailor, I sailed for Great Britain in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the Tornado catamaran. I was also our National Optimist coach for three seasons attending the World Championships.
In 2005 I became an International Race Officer and was part of the race management teams in the Olympic Games in Qingdao in 2008, in Weymouth in 2012 and in the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016. I am the International Class Race Officer for the Olympic classes - 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 in addition to the International Moth and the 29er. I have officiated at more than one hundred major championships.
As the 29er Class Race Officer I am responsible for running the racing at our major championships making sure that racing is of the highest standard, safe, fair and consistent. I have produced a number of race management documents, detailed on the Class website, which give details of how racing will be organised. The principle document is the Race Management Guidelines, plus a document on race Management Practice but also included on the website are standard versions of the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions which can be easily amended to match the event being organised. There are a number of reference documents there such as the recommended course diagram and the target time chart. A very important part of my responsibilities includes safety so there are documents included on the website on the Safety Requirements and the Support Boat Regulations for major championships which are mandatory.
Please look up these documents, I hope you find them useful and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
