With an unprecedented 218 entries representing 24 nations, the 29er Class will be determining the 2012 World Champion this week in Travemuender, Germany amidst the spectacle of Travemuender Woche and the festival it brings.
Back among the competitors are several former World Champions including the 2011 champions, Argentinians Belen Tavella and Franco Greggi who have decided to sail in separate boats this edition. Frenchman Kevin Fischer, 2010 World Champion and fresh off his European Championship win in Poland last week will be a favorite as will last week’s ISAF Youth world champions Spaniards Carlos Robles and Florian Trittle. Australian Steve Thomas, 2008 & 2009 World Champion will be teaming up with Opti World champ Thailand’s Noppukuo Poonpat and 2007 World Champion crew Federico Villambrosa of Argentina will be sailing with Micael Sielecki.
It’s no surprise that Germany has fielded the largest showing with 66 teams followed by Great Britain with 32. Hong Kong, Thailand both make their first showing at the 29er Worlds this year.
Racing begins on Monday, July 23 with three days of the qualifying series followed by three days of the final series. The prizegiving will be held on Saturday, July 28.
