A spectacular summer day with warm sunshine and a gusty offshore breeze ranging from 8 - 14 knots provided a superb last day of racing at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship.
The weather conditions have tested the worlds best youth sailors all week but at the end of the last day the majority came off the water with broad smiles on their faces.

The French boys rounded off the championship with a bullet in the last race to win gold in the high performance 29er dinghy. Their consistency throughout the championship held off the kiwi team of Alex Maloney and Sam Bullock. The French guys go back to Western France to join the 29er World Champions in their home port. The 29er fleet completed 10 races during the championship week.

Day 3  The 29ers tried to sail two races today but the breeze shut down meaning they ended up crawling round the inner course and have now completed six races. Gael Jaffrezic and Julien Bloyet (FRA), have discarded their worst result a fifth and carded top three results to end the day with a seven point lead from Alexandra Maloney and Sam Bullock who have been knocking on the door of the top ranks all week.

A tired looking Alex and Sam shared their days experience, "We had a pretty average start but rounded the first mark in fourth. We found some good lanes. Some boats went right to the corners but we stayed in breeze, but it was difficult. Keeping the kite filled downwind was hard on the last leg."
 

Day 1 The 29ers raced two races closer to the shore and having completed five races are able to discard their worst result. This has had an effect on the overall placing's with the USA crew of Antoine Screve and James Moody dropping a 15th in race three and counting top three positions in all their other races. Gael Jaffrezic and Julien Bloyet (FRA) won the first race of the day and followed up with a second in race two to keep the pressure on the Americans.

Gael Jaffrezic explained, "We went to the pool to relax until we were called to go out. We had to concentrate hard during the race. It was difficult because it was very shifty. If we are down in around 10th place or higher we have to focus to find ways to overtake the fleet."
Tuesday is a lay day with a boat trip to Bosphorus planned. Racing resumes on Wednesday with another three races scheduled for all fleets.
