As anyone watching Sailgroove interviews can tell you, the experience in Miami was extremely positive for everyone. The 29erXX proved itself an enjoyable challenge for skiff and non-skiff sailors alike. Italian 470 skipper and two-time Olympian (470 and Yngling) Giulia Coguilia.jpgnti told Sailgroove "It was so much fun. I'm a 470 sailor and I'm a skipper, and I'm not used to t rapezing a lot, but I'm having a lot of fun." When asked why she took a break from her 470 training she smiled and said "Hopefully to get to Rio 2016 with the 29erXX, so I'm practicing for that".

Nine teams from four countries (ARG, AUS, ITA, USA) and four continents enjoyed three days of racing and a practice day. The Coconut Grove Sailing Club race committee did a great job on the water and the wind mostly cooperated allowing the fleet 10 races. Seiko provided beautiful watch trophies for the top two teams of Hannah Nattrass (AUS) / Graham Biehl (USA) and Francisco Piccini (ARG) and Sofia Tedin (ARG). Congratulations!

The friendly vibe of the event really helped all sailors to feel welcome. As event coach Trevor Moore commented, "We had a great opportunity where everyone was willing to try different tuning sets and we were able to line up and compare". It was immediately obvious to all participants the open attitude of the 29erXX offers a chance for all sailors to learn from each other. By working together with coach Trevor the group excelled as each day lead to rig setting adjustments that were discussed and digested by all participants in the daily debrief.

adam.gif Adam Roberts (USA), a 470 skipper, reports "As a first time skiffer it was a pretty awesome experience. its just like learning sailing all over again. I can't complain about going fast all the time. I've had a great time." Many of the event's sailors share Adam's feelings.

You're probably wondering how and where you can get into a 29erXX yourself? The 2010 schedule can be found on the 29er.org site under the XX tab. It is quite comprehensive for 2010, thanks to support from longtime sponsor Seiko. Seiko will provide beautiful watch trophies for three 29erXX events in 2010. There are many privately-owned rigs in Europe and this year's European events already have many sailors signing up. A growing fleet in North America can look forward to two Canadian events this summer. A fleet is just starting on the west coast of USA and will likely have two or three events scheduled in the next few weeks. Events are also being planned in Argentina and Australia. Look to the XX tab on 29er.org for more information.pietcc.jpg

gardasmall.jpgGARDA EVENT DRAWS 9 29ERXX

9 29erXX's representing 4 countries sailed on Lake Garda Oct 31-Nov 1 in a series of 9 races.  Local Italians Daniele Poli and Michele Monzini won the event with 4 wins in the last 4 races!  Great sailing by all teams in tough conditions prove that the boat is here and ready for prime time!  Full results can be found here

Report from Dave Hall

After the resounding success in the summer of the Seiko 29erXX Gold Cup Seiko once again provided sponsorship and spectacular prizes for a second event at Lake Garda. Taking place at Fraglia Vela Riva over the long weekend of the 30th October – 1st November it provided a fitting close to the European season..
Sailed in conjunction with the last 29er Eurocup nine selected teams arrived and with the help of Ovington boats set up their rented xx rigs on their own boats.
During the run up to the 3 day event Lake Garda had provided much autumn sunshine but not a lot of wind. However, bang on race time of the first day a 20knot plus gradient wind  swept in from the south and gave the fleet 3 cracking races. In race one Dave Hall and Nicola Smith started how they hoped to go on wining the first race by keeping the rig above the water while some of the new teams found swimming to be time consuming. The next 2 races however were dominated by the GBR team of Katie Nurton and Louise Walker who started to revel in the strong winds.
Day 2 started with a little lighter wind for the first two races and a few different names popped to the front. The Italian team of Daniele Poli and Michele Monzini who had an indifferent first day started their climb to the front of the fleet with a 3,3,2,1. The young German team of Phillip Mueller and Janich Moretz also had a good day with  a 1,2,2,2.
The last day brought an early start to catch the morning Northerly breeze. There were only a few points between the first boats so it was all to play for. Conditions were shifty to say the least but Poli & Monzini seemed to understand the pattern and won the first race of the day by a substantial margin. Mueller & Moritz gave away the chance of the event title with an OCS while Hall & Smith sailed consistently to gain a 3rd. The final race took place in the dying wind; once again the ITA team of Poli & Monzini led the way holding their nerve as the wind came and went alternately on the last run.
A truly eventful regatta for which a big thank you must go to the Fraglia Vela Riva for organising the racing at such short notice and of course Seiko for the fantastic prizes.
